Vaughan Lowery

Vaughn Lowery has to be one of the most recognizable male faces in the modeling industry. You have seen him everywhere. He has done campaigns for Dasani Water, Gap, Skechers, Old Navy and Mitsubishi. He is probably best known for his role as Kmart's, 'Joe Boxer' spokemodel, where he introduced the "boxer boogie" to the world. He has also made appearances on ABC's Primetime, America' Next Top Model and the Tyra Bank's Show. As well as modelng Vaughn Lowery is also an actor and musician. Now Vaughn is delving further into the film industry and he is telling us all about it.

Vaughn1 1. How did you go from Ivy League Graduate to being one the most recognizable male models in the industry?

Upon graduation from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, I moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.  A celebrity make-up artist Sam Fine discovered me and thought I should model as well.  I took my first test photo shoot with celebrity photographer Fadil Berisha and the rest is history.

2. What was your first shoot like?
My first shoot was exhilarating.  I couldn't believe that I beat out 1000's for a major credit card ad. Not to mention the rate made me feel like I won the lottery.

3. You have had the priviledge of working with some brilliant photographers. Do you have any favourites?
My favorite photographer (and good friend) is Ron Contarsy .  He was the first high-end fashion photographer that taught me about movement, behavior, mood, expression and energy. In addition, his imagery is so provocative yet classic. I will never stop using him.

4.Hey Vaughn, you have modelled, danced, made music, and to top that off you graduated from an Ivy League University. Is there anything that Vaughn Lowery is bad at? anything at all?

I'm bad at being on time — slight procrastinator. I love to wait till the last minute. Like, if I have an appointment at 6:30pm. I would leave at 6:15pm — knowing dam well that's not enough time to get there. Don't worry. I'm working on it.

5. Do you have a favourite designer?
Hmm. There are so many designers in today's market.  LRG, D&G and WE. I'm really feelin' any designer that focuses on Japanese cuts. I take long walks to fit in those brands.

6. You are a man of many hats ( acting, music etc) .Tell us about your music?
The music I'm working on his alternative hip-hop.  It's fused with electronic, big base and old school hip hop.  I like to tell stories in my rhymes. My inspiration is Slick Rick.

are one of the most recognizable African American male models. Do you think the industry is becoming more appreciative of ethnic diversity?
When I first started modeling, some of the major agencies had 1 to 3 male models on their board. Now they have 5 to 15.

8. The Joe Boxer ad was probably one of the biggest ads EVER. When you first did the boxer boogie did you think it would blow up the way that it did?
When I wrapped the ad, the entire crew, director, clients, and ad agency gave me a standing ovation. I knew it was going to make an impression.

8b. Was there  any negative backlash as a result of doing that ad?
Most highly publicized brand mascots/spokespeople are bound to be criticized — good or bad.  It was a job and I did it. AOL recently named me one of the "Top 25 Ad Icons of All Time" http://aboutvaughn.com/press.html

9. You have done quite a lot of work on TV(scrubs, Superbowl Ad, OUTLANDER Ad, etc). Is there any actor that you admire or  that you would like to follow in their footsteps?
Johnny Depp.

10. You recently did a project called "The Young and Evil", tell us about it.
In this 35mm short film, a sexually defiant teen sets out to seduce an HIV prevention advocate into giving him the virus. I took this lead role to showcase my acting chops.  Normally, I play young and fun — here's an opportunity for me to play the other end of the spectrum and show the world that I can do strong character work.

11. What is the craziest thing that you have ever done?
Five years ago, while modeling in South Africa, I took an 8 hour class and skydived out of a plane at 4000 feet.

12. What  are your future career goals?
I moved to Los Angeles to become a film actor and solidify a golden statue.

Thanks for the interview
