The UK has only ever won the Ford Supermodel of the World competition once but I think that another victory might be just around the corner. Sadie Phelps was recently selected as the UK Winner of the Ford Supermodel competition and I am seeing shades of Karen Elson and Agyness Deyn. Sadie has a very high fashion look. The Ford Supermodel Contest has helped launched the careers of the likes of Adriana Lima, Charo Ronquillo, Gemma Ward and Kendra Spears and after the final in January, I think we will be able to add Sadie Phelps to the list of supermodels who started out on this contest.
1. Tell us a little about yourself – (where you grew up, your life- anything you wish to tell)
I live in the Great Garden Of England that is better known as Kent. I've had a fairly average up bringing, not exactly the richest. Most of my childhood was spent in an 'extra-ordinary' town called Strood.. My parents split when i was 6, so I now live between Meopham and East Malling.
2. How did you get involved in the world of modelling? Were you always interested in fashion?
I was up London once in Covent Garden with my boyfriend and a friend of mine, when a man came running out from this salon (Essensuals Toni & Guy) asking if i would like to be his model for a hair competition, at the time i was 16 and all i cared about was standing out from the crowd, rebelling as one would say! So i really didnt care what happened with my hair, i was more than happy to model for him, my hair went from long to SHORT over night! We ended up winning the competition and i think i could put that down as being one of my first 'shows'.
I remember saying "wow it would be great to work at this salon" (being jobless at the time!) and before i knew it they had offered me a job as a salon assistant, it was great at first but the work got tough, i stayed there for a year and in that time i met so many people in and out of the fashion industry and developed alot of contacts, i was asked to model here and there for shows, shoots and editorial work.
Really if i hadnt worked there then i dont think i would have progressed to where i am now.
3. The Ford Model Competition has some very prestigious Alumni. Chanel Iman, Kendra Spears and Adriana Lima. How did it feel to win the British leg of the competition?
I was so SHOCKED! There were some amazing ladies on the line up and at the time for me to even be in the top 12 was enough!
When everyone was backstage and they announced that i had won, I wanted to jiggle around on the spot with my hands to my mouth and explode with happiness, but i had to contain myself and do a finale on the run way, i almost cried, It was like something good had finally come my way! Something that i hadn't really thought about!
4. If you weren’t modelling what career path would you follow?
Well i'm taking an Art & Design course and specialising in fashion design at college at the moment, art has always been in my life, ive been drawing from a young age, i think it comes from my Dad.
I need to be in the creative industry one way or another.
5. Describe your personal style?
I've had many, im a chameleon! Right now though i'm really adoring the whole 1950's era, its perfect! I love the femininity, hugging of the curves! Its sexy!
6. You have gorgeous red hair? Is that your real hair colour?
A very common question, yes it is and thank you!
7. In the UK there is sometimes a negative attitude towards red hair. We sometimes hear of people being picked on because they have red hair. In fact the BBC described it as “Gingerism”. Models, like yourself, Lily Cole and Karen Elson are helping to popularize red hair. How does this make you feel?
"Gingerism" Truthfully?? it actually makes me giggle! What does that mean exactly?? Do certain individuals not see the obscene amount of blondes out there either? I think it all stems from school, its a colour thats NOT COMMON, its also a colour that isnt really a favourite, orange.
The other day i saw an advert on TV promoting a huge party where all the gingers in the world could 're-unite' WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT? it's a hair colour is it not?! Same as the many beautiful skin colours out there!
My advice would be to completely laugh it off, ITS RIDICULOUS! People get bored after a while.
8. Tell us something about you that would surprise most people.
I live in a caravan and i can horse ride.
9. What makes a man attractive?
Wild, Intellectual and Charming.
10. What is your ultimate goal as a model? What is in your future?
I have absolutely no idea! Thats what makes it fun.
Special thanks to Sadie Phelps and best of luck in the Ford Supermodel of the World Finals in Brazil.
