SS11 Beauty Trends: Orange Lips

29 September 2010 1 Comment

There's always a certain point during Fashion Week when I get really burnt out on following all the runway coverage. It's not because I'm not fascinated by the shows, its that I start feeling glum about the fact that I'll never be able to own any of the incredible clothes. It is at this point that I turn my attention to the beauty trends. Hair and makeup are just as important as the clothes when presenting a collection, but generally don't come with a £2,000 price tag in a size you can't fit into. And they can often be imitated at home. So without further ado, let's talk SS11 beauty trends!

Orange Lips

Looks like next Spring, orange is king (Orange doesn't rhyme with anything so we'll just have to make do with that). From the orange-on-orange seperates at Prada to PPQ's pumpkin-coloured mini dresses, orange is everywhere on the runways...including models' lips. And its not a shy peach or a muted coral, it's balls-out traffic cone orange at Fendi and Ohne Titel, neon at Les Copains and a glossy persimmon at Vena Cava.

To achieve the look at home, Lime Crime Cosmetics has you covered with a buttery orange-sherbert lipstick called "Cosmopop" and a matte tangerine shade called "My Beautiful Rocket". Purchase online at Lime Crime or at Space NK in the UK. For a more apricot shade, go for Illamasqua's "Perilous" (buy here).

Check back at Beauty Confessional for more beauty trends straight from the runway, including more orange, next time on the eyes!

Matthew Williamson Bvlgari1Matthew Williamson is the king of collaboration (previously having collaborated with H&M and Debenhams). The British designer is collaborating with Italian luxury brand Bulgari. The capsule collection includes a range of totes and clutch bags. The bags are based on geometrical shapes and include Mathew Williamsons classic design motifs such as bright , bold jewel colours and kaleidoscope-style prints.

"I skimmed the archives from about 1950 forward and came across the hexagonal shapes of the clutches that I embossed on the leather and that are also a part of the kaleidoscope print of the fabric bags. I added my own heart print for synthesis.” - Matthew Williamson

The capsule collection will be available at Matthew Williamson and Bulgari stores from January 2011.

Naomi Campbell INTERVIEW magazine

Next month, Naomi Campbell plays cover star of Interview Magazine's October Issue. The cover was shot by photography duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. In the accompanying interview, Naomi discusses her "controversial life"  and  discusses how  she feels about being viewed as a role model.

“Listen, I make many mistakes. Many mistakes. I’m not a perfect human being. I have to learn from my mistakes. And a lot of the ones I’ve made have been public. So I always get nervous when people speak about something that sounds like a role model, because I don’t know if I’ve been a great role model myself.”- Naomi Campbell

katy perry russell brand engaged 1If you ever find yourself at a loss for a chat-up line, you can't go wrong complimenting a girl's fashion sense. It certainly seems to have worked for Russell Brand, who's romance with fiancé and "California Gurls" singer Katy Perry all started with an Alexander McQueen bracelet.
In Brand's sequel to autobiography My Booky Wook, the British comedian recounts the moment he fell for Perry when he complemented her bracelet at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"It is an Alexander McQueen bangle, a simple hoop with two skulls facing each other at the ends. Wordlessly she smiles, removes it and places it on my wrist, gently handcuffing me. 'It's okay. Keep it. To remind you of me.'…I look at her and it makes me feel still. Then, looking into her eyes, quietly I say: 'I don't need anything to remind me of you.' That is how I fell in love. Throughout (the VMAs) I carried the bracelet in my pocket. Even though she was there."

As adorable as it is to see a happy stylish couple brought together by fashion, all I can think about is how much I want that bracelet.

Ross Paul Keenan 12

As I mentioned before there were two collections at Untold season 7 that I took a particular liking to. The first was a collection by Tijana and Mila Popovic and the second was a  menswear collection from Ross Paul Keenan. The Saville Rowe trained designer was the winner of this year's Untold competition and won the prize of showcasing his collection at Untold. After seeing his collection it was obvious why he won.
Ross Paul Keenan's collection is a fusion of vintage tailoring with a contemporary vibe. The result is a collection that is perfectly suited to the dapper man of the 21st century. I love how he reworked classic silhouettes such as the trench coat and waistcoat and gave them a modern interpretation.

Tijana & Mila Popovic untold

On Monday, we visited the Untold, London Fashion Week show at the design museum. There were two particular standout collection that really hit my radar. The first was Tijana and Mila Popvic, the designers used a floral motif throughout their collection and combined it with white and black to create a very edgy collection. My favourite piece was a white leather and denim, asymetric jacket. Other notable pieces include a lace tunic and floral print jacket. The result was a very cohesive fashion forward collection.

Katy Perry in Giles Deacon was banned sesame street

Katy Perry recently filmed a segment for Sesame Street where she did a special version of Hot and Cold with Elmo. However, the skit hasn’t gone down well with parents because they didn’t like the amount of cleavage  Katy was showing when she wore a green Giles Deacon dress. We think this is totally ridiculous, especially considering that Miss Piggy shows more cleavage than Katy. The dress Katy is wearing  was the first look from Giles Deacon's RTW 2010 collection.

Burberry Prorsum SS2011 London Fashion Week video

Burberry is the one show at London Fashion Week that everyone was waiting for. Christopher Bailey didn’t disappoint. For his Spring 2011 collection, the designer brought back the military trend but reinterpreted it to include aviator jackets, and military inspired coats with leather finishes. The show had one mishap, Burberry campaign girl, Emma Porter literally fell flat on the floor as she was closing the show. However, she got up and finished her catwalk. Its not about falling its about getting back up.

Topshop Unique SS2010 video London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week may be over but our coverage of LFW is still going strong. The Topshop Unique show proved that seventies style aesthetic is back with a bang. The collection mixed bright solids with prints and included silhouettes such as flares. Fringing and acid wash were also used throughout the collection to give the collection an authentic hippie vibe. The look was coupled with frizzy big Seventies hair.

Long Live McQueen: Lee Alexander Remembered in London

22 September 2010 No Comments

33957 e1 lThis year, amongst all the flurry and excitement of London Fashion Week, a dark shadow loomed over the tents. A critical figure in the British design world was missing. On Monday the 20th of September, right in the middle of fashion week, a gathering of family, friends and fellow designers met at Saint Paul's Cathedral in London to remember a young legend, a true artist; the late Lee Alexander McQueen. Bjork covered "Gloomy Sunday" for the star-studded audience which included McQueen's friends and muses Kate Moss and Daphne Guinness, and American Vogue's Anna Wintour addressed the crowd.
After the 40-year old designer took his own life in February, the fashion world was in shock and the future of the label was put in question. Since then the designing duties have been passed on to the very capable Sarah Burton, who had long worked with McQueen, and the brand lived on. This Spring Summer 2011 season will be the first full women's collection with Burton as head designer. The fashion world holds its breath until we find out if she too is capable of making, as Anna Wintour put it at the ceremony, "[the] most exquisite couture dresses and at the same time...a real impact on how the world dressed".

House of Holland SS2011

21 September 2010 No Comments

Henry Holland's House of Holland line is synonymous with Fun. The designer ignores trends and creates collections that are youthful  and quirky. The collection consisted of 3 motifs that were used throughout the collection. Banana leaf print, metallic fabrics, gold lame' and  stars were present on almost all of the looks in the show. Sometimes they were used in combination and at other times they weren't. Pleating and fringing were also strongly used in Henry's collection.

To top off the show the front row guests included Nicola Roberts ( Henry Holland's new muse), Agyness Deyn and Pixie Geldof.

Jourdan Dunn walks for Jaeger London SS2011

21 September 2010 No Comments

The Jaeger London Show just finished and Jourdan Dunn was one of the models that took  to the catwalk for the brand. The first models on the catwalk wore white minimalist silhouettes, which I believe will be a big trend in Spring Summer 2011. The collection consisted of structures pieces that had a lot of liquidity and movement. Also present were the classic blazers and waistcoats that emphasize Jaegers strong Tailoring. In addition to white dresses the colour palette also included red, blue and a white tunic with a watercolour poppy print.

video of the Jaeger London SS2011 Fashion Show will  be posted as soon as it is available.
