Joe Bloggs vs The Fashionistos : Paul Costelloe Autumn Winter 2010

21 February 2010 5 Comments

Paul Costelloe Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

Instead of doing our usual reviews of London Fashion Week. This season we decided to do something a little different. I found 6 six guys. 3 of them are fashion bloggers and work in the fashion industry and 3 of them are typical guys that don't work in the fashion industry and aren't actively involved in fashion. Sometimes there is a disconnect between what the fashion industry thinks is great and what the wider population likes so we have decided to put that to to the test . It's a battle of Joe Bloggs vs. the Fashionistos. The first designer before our panel is Paul Costelloe.

Special thanks to Fashionbeans, WWIT, Male Mode

3 menswear fashion bloggers. (who know their D&G from their Dolce & Gabanna  and can correctly pronounce Hussein Chalayan and Hermes)

Cillian from Male Mode - "This does strike as a mere mash-up of all the most popular trends of the past few seasons (lace, leather, metallics) but, having said that, there are some wearable pieces. The belted camel coat with dramatic shoulders and lapels as well as the bouffant hair seem to right any wrongs that have been committed though."

Dennis from WWIT - "The whole collection has a old victorian vibe, classic sihoulettes a la breakfast at Tiffany's that's kept short and sexy with emphasis on the voluminous skirt. Luxurious tailored coats provide the juxtaposition with the flirty ruffles and gorgeous prints, the colour palette screams autumn whilst the metallics keep things modern. Elegant functional pieces that's easy to wear."

Jacob from Fashionbeans  - "Jadore this collection. Naughty, repressed country folk instantly springs to mind. Costelloe has used some Great Prints in fall coloured fabrics with a touch of muted blue and Black lace. Heavy, woollen tweed like coats give a ‘winter in the woods vibe to the collection. Overall the collection has a somewhat Mothy / dark butterfly feel with the exaggerated shoulders and clinched in waste."

3  regular guys who from different walks of lives who aren't involved in the fashion business.

Steve from London -Interesting collection overall, quite conservative in parts and sexy in others. The heels are great! I love them. I like the lace in some outfits. Lots of blue and black together which I'm not crazy about. My favourite outfit is picture 1, which is the silvery open neck dress, very sexy. But my favourite item of all is the gold trousers in picture 2. I love these, but I would like to see a black top to go with the trousers.

James from Aylesbury – The long military trench coats in (pictures 4,5) really stand out; they are fantastic, really sleek.  I am not sure the Rar Rar dresses with bulky shoulder pads work, the overall shape is all wrong, bit too Blackadder.  However I love (picture 3) the black and blue diagonal check bodice with the luscious black Rar Rar.  The tight leather sleeves/gloves in this photo are also cool.

Nish from London- Not having followed any fashion shows in last few years whilst hiding in my underwater cave, I am surprised to see something so wearable and appealing on the ramp. The clothes with the golden hues and checkered skirts are my favourites, although I suspect that the coats and skirts wouldn't work together. So despite being spectacular I feel the collection is slightly disjointed. Having said that, I would wear it, if I was a girl and there were parties to go to down here, also would need waterproof versions of the collection.

THE CONSENSUS:  Paul Costelloe gets 2 thumbs up from us  because hes managed to impress the fashion pack while still appealing to the general public.

The next designer before our panelists will be Charlie Le Mindu so stay tuned for that.

Burberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

The BFC are  finally embracing technology. For awhile the  fashion industry has largely ignored the technology. Now bloggers are regularly invited to fashion shows and sit on the front row next to Magazine Editors. The organisers of London Fashion week have taken it a step further by announcing they will be streaming all of the shows from British Fashion Council tent will stream live online.

That means that you will be able able to watch all of your  favourite designers like Jaeger, Burberry and PPQ  live on the London Fashion Week website .

Liberty of London  has got me super excited. First there was their collaboration with MAC Cosmetics and now they are collaborating with show designer, Nicholas Kirkwood.

In honour of the  50th Anniversary of Liberty’s Carnaby Street store, Kirkwood has  taken two of their signature floral prints, the Bounty and the Santa Maria  and covered his signature  platform heels in the prints.

I wonder who Liberty will collaborate with next. Its an exciting prospect!

Here are the shots from the Burberry menswar runway show that took place on the 16th of January. As expected the Burberry  Autumn Winter 2010 collection was a fusion of fashion and utility, style and function.

As always the Burberry collection had really strong coats. "PROTECT, EXPLORE, INSPIRE A salute to our heritage – Burberry parade coats" -Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer.

Naked models will sell anything

03 January 2010 1 Comment

If you were a fashion retailer how would you advertise your sale?..get the models to wear your clothes….WRONG.

Brand Alley abviously knows that sex sells and they got 6 hot naked models to strut across Oxford Street ( one of the busiest shopping streets in the world.) The 4 female models and 2 male models did a catwalk show at Oxford Circus wearing only bodypaint to promote Brand Alley's sale. Now anyone that knows london knows that it gets pretty cold in Winter. Infact as I am writing this post the temperature is about -1 celsius. SO not only  our these models braving the eyes of onlookers they are also  facing the bitter cold. They're mums and dads must be so proud of them.

The song playing during the Flash Walk is Catwalk Criminal by Kane. Its very fitting given that this impromptu catwalk show surely caused a stir. I even see that the Police were at the Scene to get a look, make sure the situation remained under control.

Last Saturday was the "Make do and Mend", ethical fashion event at  Oxfam Chelsea. Unfortunately I spent the day in A&E  ( freak eye scratching accident) and didn't make it to the event.  However, I was lucky enough to get some photos from the event courtesy of Tom Worman. The event was all about making something  new out of something old and  being able to create fashion from vintage clothing.

“Gorgeous guys in Calvin Klein underwear”…. A statement bound to get the attention of most young women. So when I heard that Calvin Klein is looking for its next rising star in the 9 Countries 9 Men 1 Winner Competition naturally I was interested in finding out more about the contest… and the fabulous guys in the competition. A prestigious panel of judges are currently reviewing all entries and will soon choose nine finalists who will represent each of the nine participating countries in Europe. The lucky nine will then vie for a one-year top male modelling contract with Select Model Management, and snag a luxury trip for two to South Africa.
There are 1000s of entries from across Europe but (just for you) I have picked out 4 of the most outstanding contestants from England and I am giving you a brief opportunity to find out a bit about them during the course of the week… See the first Alistair Wardell below.

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself, (your background, and your interests, anything you want the public to know)

Well, I was brought up predominantly in Harrogate in North Yorkshire, spending a few formative years in Scotland, before venturing to London to read Law at University College London (UCL). Upon graduating from UCL I went to work as an Investment Banker in the City for nearly two years, and despite the unpopularity of the industry at the moment, it was a fantastic opportunity to meet, learn and socialise with some incredibly intelligent and diverse characters.

I guess that my main interest would have to socialising, anybody who knows me certainly wouldn’t hesitate in vouching for my enjoyment of a good party, and any attempt at claiming a proper or noteworthy hobby would just be a fabrication having stopped playing Rugby seriously shortly after beginning University. Though as pastimes go drinking, dining and conversing with friends and good company, particularly in a City as vibrant as London, is hard to surpass.

Over the years I have also become fond of exercising. Having not always been quite so athletic, I think it really was working in the City and escaping to the gym to maintain sanity and focus that cemented my affinity with sweat.

2. What made you decide to enter the Calvin Klein competition?

In short, it was my brother. Several people have mentioned modelling to me in the past, but it was not until he brought the competition to my attention and suggested I enter that I gave it serious consideration. Coming out of working in the City, and looking for a change, coupled with my brother’s encouragement, made me think why not. I mean the competition offers a unique opportunity to experience something completely different, and really would provide the change in direction to my life that I have been searching for.

 3. What artists would I find on your iPod right now?

Somewhat of an eclectic mix, including the new Bon Jovi album, The Script, David Guetta, Pavarotti and of course some old school Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

 4. What makes you stand out from the crowd/ what makes you unique?

Probably my creativity and panache for innovative and different thinking. To be clichéd, my thinking out of the box approach to life. This comes out in my care free and free spirited, borderline reckless, approach to enjoying life.

 5. If you could escape for a week to anywhere in the world where would it be?

Whitehaven beach, Whitsunday Island, Australia. Forming part of the protected Australian national park, Whitehaven beach on the uninhabited Whitsunday Island is accessible only by seaplane or boat, and for me, offers unparalleled escapism.

William Baker Presents : Westfield London Style

26 September 2009 3 Comments

Black Skull Boots - McQueen at Larizia Ariana YSL bag

(Arent those the fiercest boots you have ever seen)

This week we visited the "William Baker  presents: Westfield London Style 2009". It was basically a fashion show styled  by personal stylists to the stars and BBoy underwear creator, William Baker. He presented 60 looks for Autumn Winter 2009/2010. The show featured the hottest pair of peep-toe booties I have ever seen (Alexander Mcqueen) and they  were hot (pictured above). The show featured lots of sequins, chunky knits and lace. All of which are very on trend this season.

One interesting  aspect of William Baker's styling was  his choices of underwear as outerwear. In womenswear this trend has been going on for a while however, in menswear I have never noticed it.  WIlliam Baker teamed jackets with  long johns and translated the  trend to menswear. Another trend that WIlliam Baker  borrowed from womens wear was sequins. I like  the Sequin hoodies from Joseph's.

WIlliam Baker said, "Sequins are in this season, even a hint of a sequin on a scarf or belt makes an outfit modern, and on trend. But for me… I love sequins more and more. Wear sequins with sequins and add a statement necklace too". Baker also went for a very 80's  vibe with the styling and I love how he mixed high street clothes with high end designers.

PS. William we love sequins too. the more the merrier!!!! (Click here to see just how much sequins we love)

Sequin jumper sanro

Knit Collar by Pal Zaleri, Suit by Next, Sequined shirt by Sandro ( love the use of  the sequins and the blue  shoes and chain they add a bold statement to the look)

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Blouse  from Marc by Marc Jacobs.  ( the carefully placed pockets are so risque)

Black jacket tommy hilfiger

Black Jacket by Tommy Hilfiger, Shoes  and shirt by Zara. ( Im not sure where the leggings are from but I love the Top half  of this image. The white under shirt is giving me shades of Karl Lagerfeld)

River island jersey dress

Jersey Dress by River Island, shoes by Carvella ( The studded boots are to die for)

Grey trousers armani exchange waistcoat

Waist-coat and trousers by Armani Exchange, shirt by Next. (Classy)

Purple hooded bodysuit river island

Union Jack  bag by Aspinal of London, Patent boots by Fornarina, Purple hooded body suit  by River Island. ( this look gives me vibes of Lady Gaga and  Grace Jones)

Bboy underwear

Sequined hoodie by Joseph. Pants by Bboy ( First  reaction: "WHAT THE HELL!! second reaction: I never thought I'd be a fan of sequins in menswear  but Im loving  the sequined hoodie and as you know I'm a fan of Bboy underwear. However  before  going outside I'd recommend putting on some trousers, it gets pretty cold in London )

Antonio Berardi Spring Summer 2010

23 September 2009 No Comments

I thought I'd post one of my favorite designers, who I think is severely under-rated, Antonio Berardi. I Love the feminine lines of the clothes. As usual with Antonio Berardi collections, the clothes have a sexy vibe and are built around enhancing the natural curves of a woman's body. His spring summer 2010 collection included paneled dresses, corset dresses, vest-dresses. The color pallette ranged from nude tones to orange, blue and black.
