SS11 Beauty Trends: Orange Lips

29 September 2010 1 Comment

There's always a certain point during Fashion Week when I get really burnt out on following all the runway coverage. It's not because I'm not fascinated by the shows, its that I start feeling glum about the fact that I'll never be able to own any of the incredible clothes. It is at this point that I turn my attention to the beauty trends. Hair and makeup are just as important as the clothes when presenting a collection, but generally don't come with a £2,000 price tag in a size you can't fit into. And they can often be imitated at home. So without further ado, let's talk SS11 beauty trends!

Orange Lips

orange lips ss11

Looks like next Spring, orange is king (Orange doesn't rhyme with anything so we'll just have to make do with that). From the orange-on-orange seperates at Prada to PPQ's pumpkin-coloured mini dresses, orange is everywhere on the runways...including models' lips. And its not a shy peach or a muted coral, it's balls-out traffic cone orange at Fendi and Ohne Titel, neon at Les Copains and a glossy persimmon at Vena Cava.

To achieve the look at home, Lime Crime Cosmetics has you covered with a buttery orange-sherbert lipstick called "Cosmopop" and a matte tangerine shade called "My Beautiful Rocket". Purchase online at Lime Crime or at Space NK in the UK. For a more apricot shade, go for Illamasqua's "Perilous" (buy here).

House of Holland SS2011

21 September 2010 No Comments

Henry Holland's House of Holland line is synonymous with Fun. The designer ignores trends and creates collections that are youthful  and quirky. The collection consisted of 3 motifs that were used throughout the collection. Banana leaf print, metallic fabrics, gold lame' and  stars were present on almost all of the looks in the show. Sometimes they were used in combination and at other times they weren't. Pleating and fringing were also strongly used in Henry's collection.

To top off the show the front row guests included Nicola Roberts ( Henry Holland's new muse), Agyness Deyn and Pixie Geldof.

Jourdan Dunn walks for Jaeger London SS2011

21 September 2010 No Comments

The Jaeger London Show just finished and Jourdan Dunn was one of the models that took  to the catwalk for the brand. The first models on the catwalk wore white minimalist silhouettes, which I believe will be a big trend in Spring Summer 2011. The collection consisted of structures pieces that had a lot of liquidity and movement. Also present were the classic blazers and waistcoats that emphasize Jaegers strong Tailoring. In addition to white dresses the colour palette also included red, blue and a white tunic with a watercolour poppy print.

I usually look to fashion shows to see what the major trends will be for the upcoming season. So if Charlie Le Mindu's SS2011 collection is any indication I guess people will be wearing nothing. On Sunday, Charlie Le Mindu sent models down the catwalk at London Fashion week wearing nothing but pink boots and a hat.

Pierre Garroudi blue 4 225x300Last night I attended the Pierre Garroudi show. It took place at Pierre's Gallery at Arch 6 on Crucifix Lane. I recently interviewed the designer and I was given a preview of his collection when it was still incomplete. Well last night I saw the finished collection and it was absolutely Flawless. Each collection is inspired by one colour this time it was shades of blue and aquamarine that took centre stage on the runway. Each dress look breezy and sylph like almost as if they were floating. In addition to the dresses the hair was absolutely breath-taking. Bespoke hair stylists, Zed Nevada (Charlie Le Mindu has some competition) transformed the models hair into amazing works of art that included a Shark emerging from a models head, a dolphin, a ship being attacked by an Octopus and one model eve had a Ferris wheel with glowing LED lights. The flamboyance of the hair did deatract  a bit of attention from the dresses but overall everything came together to create a visual masterpiece.

Special thanks to the amazing Giglingertie!

Caroline Charles Spring Summer 2010

Caroline Charles show was throw back to the 60's. A throwback to the era of “Mad Men” and “American Dreams”. Waists were cinched in with thin belts and skirts were voluminous and floaty.

Bora Aksu Spring Summer 2011 video

17 September 2010 No Comments

Today, Turkish Born designer, Bora Aksu presented his collection  at London Fashion Week. The former New Gen winner  ent models down the runway wearing body con dresses based on giant ants, with intricate ruffles and padding that outlined the segments of an ants body ( head, thorax and abdomen ).  To accent the look the models wore crocheted woolen ants in their hair.

Overall an amazing collection.

PS. Sadie Phelps who we interviewed on the blog last year, was very busy today as she walked the Bora Aksu show and Maria Grachvogel show.

Maria Grachvogel Spring Summer 2011

17 September 2010 No Comments

Maria Grachvogel’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection was all about minimalism. Simplistic silhouettes were combined with contrasting textures.  The trend of breezy silhouettes  that was seen at NYFW continued in London. The collection had an emphasis on fluidity and motion and this was seen in the usage of cuts such as flowing maxi dresses, oversized pockets and  fishtail dresses. The colour pallette included canary yellow, silver, gold, beige, caramel and tones of grey as well as printed patterns.

Jaeger Launches a Boutique Line

15 April 2010 1 Comment

Boutique by Jaeger 2 Boutique by Jaeger 1

Boutique by Jaeger modelled by Stephanie Rad from Storm Models

Boutique by Jaeger I know we just posted about Jaeger but I thought this little development was exciting enough that it deserved it’s own post. Over the past 2 years Jaeger has revitalised the brand and become a staple on the London Fashion Week Calendar.

Now the brand is branching out and starting a new line called Boutique by Jaeger. The new diffusion line is targeted at the 18-30 market. It draws inspiration from  the 60′s Young Jaeger range. Design director, Stuart Stockdale’s muse for the collection is  today’s modish young Londoner. This woman is edgy, brimming with attitude and intoxicated by fashion.

Gone are the days when Jaeger was thought of as  brand only for older women. Now the brand appeals to every generation.

Boutique by Jaeger will launch in July  and according to Vogue, It will retail for 30% less than the Jaeger main line.

SAM_2242

I was raving about the clothes when Jaeger showed this collection at London Fashion Week. What I didn’t realize was how amazing the accessories were. From the bags with the zip detailing to the mesh platform heels. Its very young and fresh but its got that flair  and element of sophistication that Jaeger is synonymous with, its very Blair Waldorf.

Average Joe Vs The Fashionistos: Mark Fast Autumn Winter 2010

05 March 2010 No Comments

Mark Fast Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

Here is the penultimate installment n our mini feature titled Average Joe versus the Fashionisto. We got 3  male fashion bloggers to  review shows from London Fashion Week and we contrasted them with the views of three average British Guys who aren't involved int he fashion industry. This time they reviewed Mark Fast and  gave their  opinions on his use of plus sized models in his runway show and his body-con  knitwear.

The Fashionistos

Dennis from WWIT – I must admit I was a little disappointed with this collection, I couldn't see any of the amazing web inspired details from his previous collection, I just felt like this one was a watered down version. It lacked colour and silhouettes that was previously displayed, the piece worn by Amber Le Bon was unflattering, other bodycon pieces were beautiful, but nothing we haven't seen before. It was definitely missing the wow factor for me, but maybe i'm biased?

Cillian from Male Mode - I don't want to see anything incredibly cheesy like 'Plus-size models are fab!' but I think Mark Fast certainly deserves a hats-off for his decision to display his wares on the larger lady. Aside from this, I'm not an avid fan of knitwear in the form of anything other than scarves, gloves, jumpers etc. Still, Fast fuses body-con silhouettes with more structured (the dark red velvet(?) cape/skirt/bodice combo) with the loose and diaphanous (the sheer black asymmetrical number) and that's to be commended.

Jacob from Fashion Beans - This is a very down-to-earth collection that real people can wear. I love that he has used normal sized models again this year.Fast, ‘is very on it’ with the use of Velvet. Velvet is everywhere this season, and there are some nice pieces, however I am not falling over myself for this collection.

Average Joe

Steve from London -Great to see some fuller figured models. The outfit in picture 4 is the sexiest outfit Anne Boleyn never had. If only she'd had a son…..The oufit in picture 3 is my favourite and one that I would buy. The oufit in picture 2 is the sexiest. Nice and interesting collection but I wouldn't go out of my way to see more.

James from LewesThe first picture reminds me of the 'Judy Finnigan' moment when her dress fell down on stage. However, the models do look really sexy, nice change.  I especially like the dark reddish dress in picture 3, the colour, shape and cut all work.  Not to be confused with the red  little red riding hood dress (last picture) where the designer takes the good idea (in picture 3) and ruins it.  The black dress with the fishtail almost works but does not look quite right.

Nish from London – Looks like someone attempted to use all that extra material in the attic and failed miserably.  It seems like the designer had too much or little of some materials and was determined on using all of it. The models seem to have a hard time pulling the clothes off too.

MAN AW2010 at London Fashion Week – Katie Eary

28 February 2010 2 Comments

Last year Katie Eary's collection was a bit on the macabre side. This year at her MAN AW 2010 London Fashion week show,  Katie has gone for knitwear contrasted with shimmering metallic fabrics. The collection also has a strong military vibe with printed parkas and crocodile printed shirts. Katie Eary's collection drew inspiration from Irvine Walsh's novel Marabou Stork Nightmares .

Ashish LFW Autumn/Winter 2010 Fashion Show

23 February 2010 No Comments

Ashish Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

Ashish Autumn Winter 2010 was the first show  to kick off the day at the BFC tent.  The collection had a very Asian influence and used ethnic patterns  and a variety of materials  such as haringbone and sequins. There was also a big emphasis on shape  with sturctured shoulders and harem pants. Nicola Roberts  from Girls aloud and Paloma Faith were both sat on the front row at the show.  I am not fan of this collection but  I can see a few pieces that would look great as separates.

Joe Bloggs vs The Fashionistos : Paul Costelloe Autumn Winter 2010

21 February 2010 5 Comments

Paul Costelloe Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

Instead of doing our usual reviews of London Fashion Week. This season we decided to do something a little different. I found 6 six guys. 3 of them are fashion bloggers and work in the fashion industry and 3 of them are typical guys that don't work in the fashion industry and aren't actively involved in fashion. Sometimes there is a disconnect between what the fashion industry thinks is great and what the wider population likes so we have decided to put that to to the test . It's a battle of Joe Bloggs vs. the Fashionistos. The first designer before our panel is Paul Costelloe.

Special thanks to Fashionbeans, WWIT, Male Mode

Paul Costelloe Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

3 menswear fashion bloggers. (who know their D&G from their Dolce & Gabanna  and can correctly pronounce Hussein Chalayan and Hermes)

Cillian from Male Mode - "This does strike as a mere mash-up of all the most popular trends of the past few seasons (lace, leather, metallics) but, having said that, there are some wearable pieces. The belted camel coat with dramatic shoulders and lapels as well as the bouffant hair seem to right any wrongs that have been committed though."

Dennis from WWIT - "The whole collection has a old victorian vibe, classic sihoulettes a la breakfast at Tiffany's that's kept short and sexy with emphasis on the voluminous skirt. Luxurious tailored coats provide the juxtaposition with the flirty ruffles and gorgeous prints, the colour palette screams autumn whilst the metallics keep things modern. Elegant functional pieces that's easy to wear."

Jacob from Fashionbeans  - "Jadore this collection. Naughty, repressed country folk instantly springs to mind. Costelloe has used some Great Prints in fall coloured fabrics with a touch of muted blue and Black lace. Heavy, woollen tweed like coats give a ‘winter in the woods vibe to the collection. Overall the collection has a somewhat Mothy / dark butterfly feel with the exaggerated shoulders and clinched in waste."

Paul Costelloe Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

3  regular guys who from different walks of lives who aren't involved in the fashion business.

Steve from London -Interesting collection overall, quite conservative in parts and sexy in others. The heels are great! I love them. I like the lace in some outfits. Lots of blue and black together which I'm not crazy about. My favourite outfit is picture 1, which is the silvery open neck dress, very sexy. But my favourite item of all is the gold trousers in picture 2. I love these, but I would like to see a black top to go with the trousers.

James from Aylesbury – The long military trench coats in (pictures 4,5) really stand out; they are fantastic, really sleek.  I am not sure the Rar Rar dresses with bulky shoulder pads work, the overall shape is all wrong, bit too Blackadder.  However I love (picture 3) the black and blue diagonal check bodice with the luscious black Rar Rar.  The tight leather sleeves/gloves in this photo are also cool.

Nish from London- Not having followed any fashion shows in last few years whilst hiding in my underwater cave, I am surprised to see something so wearable and appealing on the ramp. The clothes with the golden hues and checkered skirts are my favourites, although I suspect that the coats and skirts wouldn't work together. So despite being spectacular I feel the collection is slightly disjointed. Having said that, I would wear it, if I was a girl and there were parties to go to down here, also would need waterproof versions of the collection.

THE CONSENSUS:  Paul Costelloe gets 2 thumbs up from us  because hes managed to impress the fashion pack while still appealing to the general public.

The next designer before our panelists will be Charlie Le Mindu so stay tuned for that.
