For several years people have linked turmeric to healing properties and cosmetic benefits. Quite often this bright yellow spice is related to ginger. This ground spice is available in supplements, food products, ayurvedic medicines, beauty and dermatology products.
As we all know turmeric is a powerful spice with many health benefits. This is due to a bioactive component called curcumin which has anti-inflammatory benefits and antioxidant properties. Several researchers and studies are interested in understanding how turmeric is beneficial for the skin.
Why Is Turmeric Good For Your Skin?
Here are some ways turmeric may benefit your skin:
- Treats acne: Acne is the most common skin concern that needs your attention. I am sure many of you have prescribed creams and skincare products to treat your acne that at times could’ve caused skin irritation and inflammation. Of course there are a gazillion treatments for acne out there, however natural treatments are the safest.
Turmeric is a miraculous ingredient that helps fight acne. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties benefit your skin by keeping bacteria from spreading and reducing the swelling of your pimples and redness.
- Lightens marks and scars: Nothing worse than breakouts for someone who wants clean and clear skin! The real question is who wants unclear skin and breakouts? Nobody, right? The marks and scars acne leave behind take several days to heal.
What would we do, if it weren’t for haldi? Turmeric is popularly known as haldi in India. You don’t have to spend an exorbitant amount of money to treat your scars and marks. Haldi can minimise the appearance of scars. Curcumin helps reduce excess production of melanin thus lightens your scars and your skin tone.
- Skin conditions: Turmeric also fights other severe skin conditions like psoriasis, rosacea and eczema. It’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties do wonders in treating even the trickiest of skin conditions. The cooling properties help reduce redness from blemishes and treat the irritated and inflamed skin.
- Prevents early aging: To protect your skin from sun damage and early ageing use turmeric face-wash or face packs. Turmeric prevents free radical production and in turn controls premature ageing by protecting skin cells from damage, fine lines and wrinkles.
How To Treat Your Skin?
So far we spoke about why turmeric is good for our skin and about its properties. Now let us see in what form we can use haldi to solve the above mentioned skin conditions. Now i would like to mention how there is no specific face pack, skincare product or face mask you should use to treat your skin condition.
What works well for one may not for another. However, there are plenty of turmeric face packs you can make at home and check for yourself what suits you the best. Now let us look at a few face packs you can make from haldi to soothe your skin.
Mix together a teaspoon of turmeric powder, honey and milk each. Make a thick paste and apply evenly on your skin. Make sure you cleanse your skin before you apply this pack. Let this mask sit on your face for about fifteen minutes and then rinse your face with cool water. This will act like an anti-ageing face mask.
A face pack made from turmeric and honey works well to lighten your scars and marks. You will need half a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of honey. Preferably, use organic honey. Mix well and apply the pack on your face for ten minutes.
Some prefer to add curd to this as well. Adding curd is optional. If you have oily skin, I would suggest you skip the curd. Just turmeric and honey will work fine.In case you want to add curd, then use a teaspoon of curd and mix well with honey and turmeric. Use this pack twice a week for it to be effective.
In case you have dry skin, you can mix turmeric with aloe vera. This will combat skin dryness. You can use aloe vera gel that is easily available in any store. One teaspoon of aloe vera and half a teaspoon of turmeric is what you will need. Mix well and apply evenly on your face for about 20 minutes.
Wash off with cool water. Use mild cleansers and face-wash to wash your face, you don’t want your skin to get drier and cause irritation. Apply this pack regularly. You can use it on alternate days for good results.
Having a tough time dealing with dark circles? Here is something that can help you. For this face pack will need a teaspoon of turmeric, half a teaspoon of curd and a few drops of lemon juice. This pack will help reduce the puffiness under your eyes.
Mix all three together and apply under your eyes for ten minutes. Do this every day. If you manage to do it every day, you can get rid of dark circles in about fifteen days. Do not leave it on for long, you could burn your skin. Use lukewarm water to wash your face.
Turmeric and apple cider vinegar face pack works best for acne treatment. Apple cider vinegar has astringent properties that works in the same way as a toner. It works well for spot treatment as well. Use it once a week and use lukewarm water to rinse your face. Rub some ice after you wash your face.
Some make a paste of haldi with water and apply it evenly on their face.Turmeric alone too does wonders. The problem in just using turmeric is that when you wash your face you will see that it leaves your face pale and yellow. It would take you a day or two for the stain to leave.
As you can see turmeric is extremely beneficial for your skin, try including it in your diet as well. This is one of the spices that are compulsorily available at Indian homes. Haldi is not only good for your skin but also your health.
